Red is for...Romance

Red symbolises love and romance – so what could be more appropriate than choosing this exciting, passionate colour for your wedding flowers?

Whether you are a blushing spring bride, or are planning to sashay up the aisle wrapped in firs in deepest December, there is plenty of choice when it comes down to red flowers!

The current trend for retro 1950’s styling – think bold, bright colour pallets and cherry red lipstick –is the perfect backdrop for choosing this signature colour.

Styling red flowers can be so versatile as well, from a simple hand-tied bridal posy to an elaborate table centre; from Regency elegance to classic romanticism through to contemporary chic.

Interflora’s flower expert, Su Whale, has some suggestions for brides who are thinking about choosing this vibrant colour for their bridal flowers.

For the spring bride, consider classic seasonal flowers such as tulips, anemones or ranunculus, many of which have the extra benefit of being UK grown.

Their strong forms lend themselves to contemporary styling; clear glass cubes filled with blocks of single coloured flowers will make a striking statement on tables.

If summer is your season then how about fiery, exotic reds?

Mokara orchids – elegant and unusual – will be a talking point at any wedding, team them with red calla lilies or contrast them with fresh green cymbidium orchids for a truly stunning display.

This is where tall candelabras will complement and enhance your table arrangements.

Carry this theme throughout your wedding with an impressive fresh flower cake display and stylish buttonholes.

And then, of course there is the red rose, the ultimate symbol of love, and it is in the autumn and winter that this gorgeous, velvety, iconic flower really comes into its own.

This is the perfect time of year for textured bouquets; combine deep red roses with plump hypericum berries, frilly retro carnations and trailing, silky amaranthus.

And how about adding rose hips and blackberries for seasonal texture? (Especially now that varieties have now been commercially grown to be prickle free!)

So whatever your season, if red is for you, then you can be confident that this strong, vibrant, exciting colour will bring a zing to your flowers and an extra helping of passion to your wedding day!
