A live band is always a winner, but you need to consider which is right for your wedding day.

Just because you love a bit of rock, doesn’t mean all your guests will. As a rule, it’s best to stick to bands that can do great cover versions of popular songs, so everyone can enjoy them. Here at the Wedding Planner we love a good tribute band, such as a take on ABBA, and solo singers.

A recent wedding we attended had a Michael Jackson impersonator and the crowd went wild, expect the same response from an Elvis or Madonna!

You don’t have to restrict yourselves to music; there are lots of other ways to entertain guests long into the night. Chill out areas are currently in vogue; separate marquees filled with scatter cushions, a bar and maybe some live music, such as a guitarist or even fun competitive video games, like Wii dance offs and karaoke competitions.

A separate room or tent for a casino is a great idea. Let guests gamble with Monopoly money on games like roulette and black jack and claim gifts if they win, such as Champagne.

We love Chinese paper lanterns, hand them out to couples and light them all at once so the night sky becomes filled with dots of light – it’s a magical site and makes for some fabulous photographs.

Alternatively, if your venue will allow it, consider setting up a fire pit, surrounded by benches and cushions, which guests can laze around long into the night. You could even provide bowls of marshmallows for them to toast on sticks.

Finally, think about how you’re going to end this fantastic day. Fireworks will make your day finish with a bang and are spectacular to watch too.
